FOR THE JOY OF GARDENING www.nebelung.de 4 Flower Bulbs in Border Plantings Most flower bulbs thrive excellently in a sunny or partially shaded location. There are also some that even like shady spots. Especially perennial bulbs and bulbs for naturalising are optimally suited for border plantings. Among others these include large-flowered daffodils (Narcissus), botanical tulips (Tulipa) and snowdrops (Galanthus). Perennial bulbs and bulbs for naturalising only need to be planted once and they multiply each year. The icing on the cake is that these bulbs are also very easy to maintain. FLOWER BULBS

5 Information & Inspiration Mixtures Hyacinthus Tulipa Narcissus Miscellaneous Service Colour Effects in Flower Beds Numerous flower beds are used as seasonal rotation plantings. This means that the flowering period of the different flower varieties alternate. Flowers with dominant colours, such as red, yellow and blue are eye-catching and ensure a high ornamental value. Flower bulbs that thrive best in flower beds include crocuses (Crocus), hyacinths (Hyacinthus orientalis), grape hyacinths (Muscari), daffodils (Narcissus) and tulips (Tulipa). With their bright colours they provide a fantastic effect in public green areas.

15 HYACINTHUS The first garden hyacinths arrived from the Orient to Europe in the middle of the 16th century. Even today, wild forms are said to exist in the area around Aleppo and Baghdad. Through intensive breeding, the Dutch have succeeded in breeding the current varieties from the wild form. They have dense floral spikes that smell very strong. Hyacinths are grown in many countries throughout the world. Between 1730 and 1850 there was even an impressive cultivation location in the area around Berlin. The hyacinth's main use is as a potted flower, but also as a flower for gardens and cutting.

www.nebelung.de 16 FOR THE JOY OF GARDENING E10 N O20 D B SIMPLE HYACINTHS Hyacinths are one of the most fragrant flowers of spring. The imposing flower spikes, which are composed of numerous, small, single flowers, impress mainly due to their uniform, almost artificial shape. Hyacinths are particularly suitable for area plantings, but are also very popular in pots. They are good to use in mixed plantings with tulips and violets. www.nebelung.de 18 FOR THE JOY OF GARDENING A3-4 E10 N O25 D P I B MULTIFLORA HYACINTHS The plants have about 5-7 elegant flower stems, which are loosely filled with florets. The tuft-like habit arises from the fact that you cut out the main flowering period with the large bulbs, keep them in specially temperature-controlled rooms and cultivate them further for another year. The missing main flower stimulates the existing secondary bulbs to develop delicate inflorescences that form the bouquet-like flowers. Multiflora hyacinths are ideal for forcing in pots and bowls. 512120 Blau Blue 512080 Rosa Pink 512100 Weiß White

19 TULIPA Tulips have been cultivated in gardens in the Middle East (Persia) since the 9th century. Turkey brought the first tulip bulbs to Central and Western Europe in the mid-16th century. Holland quickly became the centre of tulip breeding. From the trendy plant, a speculative object (tulip mania) quickly developed, followed by stock market crash in 1637! At present, 1,200 varieties are being propagated in Holland, of which 40 varieties make up more than half of the cultivated area. The greatest importance of the tulip is as a cut flower and garden flower.

www.nebelung.de 20 FOR THE JOY OF GARDENING A4 E10 N F SIMPLE, EARLY TULIPS Depending on the variety, they are excellent for forcing as a cut flower, as a forced potted plant and for growing in open fields. They reach a height of 20-40 cm and flower in the field on sturdy stems with broad leaves starting at the beginning of April. Special attention should be paid to the younger breeds of the "Prince" varieties, which are very uniform in height, flowering time and flower shape and can therefore be perfectly combined. Due to their earliest flowering period, the simple, early tulips are particularly suitable for outdoor beds, which must be cleared already in early/mid-May for a changing bloom. www.nebelung.de 22 FOR THE JOY OF GARDENING E10 N F DOUBLE, EARLY TULIPS Due to its variety, this category is ideal for forcing as a cut flower, as a forced potted plant and as an outdoor flower. Double, early tulips grow to a height of 25-35 cm and from the end of March they bloom in open fields on strong stems with double, relatively large flowers that are reminiscent of small peonies. Despite the abundance of flowers, these tulips are very weather-resistant and long-flowering. The highlights of this category are the multiflorous types, where each tulip stem already looks like a small bouquet. www.nebelung.de 24 FOR THE JOY OF GARDENING A4 E10 N F TRIUMPH TULIPS These are crossbreedings between simple tulips, Darwin tulips and other late tulips. They are an improvement of the Mendel tulips, which have no market significance today. The category of Triumph tulips contains most of the outdoor and forced varieties, but also some pot varieties and they flower in the field about 10 days before the Darwin hybrid tulips. Triumph tulips have weather-proof, large flowers, sturdy stems, fresh green leaves, they grow to about 35-60 cm high and bloom outdoors starting in early/mid-April. The range of Triumph tulips offers the widest variety of colours and has the greatest importance within the tulip categories. They are suitable for late forcing and outdoor use, where they bloom from the beginning of May. Typical for this tulip category are the strong, about 50-65 cm high stems, on which large, oblong, oval flowers sit. The petals bend back a little during the start of bloom. Originally, these tulips come from English country and cottage gardens. www.nebelung.de 54 FOR THE JOY OF GARDENING NARCISSUS Daffodils are a symbol of rebirth and are often connected with Easter because of their new birth significance. The flowering time usually begins at Easter and many daffodils have a bell-shaped flower centre. The history of daffodils goes back far into the past. Thus, in ancient Egyptian tombs, woven wreaths of white-flowering tazettes have already been found. Daffodils were introduced in Central Europe around 1560. Today, the main propagation and breeding is mainly in England and the Netherlands. Approximately 200 varieties are currently being offered. They are completely hardy, do not like waterlogging and love a sunny to partially shaded location. Most varieties naturalise well and are ideal for public areas.

The flowers have more than six normal sepals. There is a subdivision into varieties with one or more flowers per stem. 'Dick Wilden' is the most commonly propagated variety. Daffodils in this category have medium to late flowering. In open fields they should be planted in an area that is protected from the wind, so that the double flowers do not bend over. 'Carlton', which has been on the market since 1927, is the most popular variety among the large-cupped varieties and it is still the standard variety among the pure yellow types. The daffodils in this category have an early to middle flowering period, they naturalise very well and are very adaptable in terms of location. They are known as poet’s daffodils because they were praised already by the ancient Greek poets such as Homer and Anakreon regarding their balanced shape and the delicious fragrance of their flowers. A typical feature is one flower per stem and a white, showy perianth. The small corona is yellow, often with a red edge. In England, this daffodil is popularly called 'Pheasant's Eye'. The star of this group is the variety 'Actaea', which has a delicate fragrance. Daffodils of this category have a late flowering period, which is always in May. 532050 Actaea White rim, yellow cup with red edge, good for naturalising
