The botanical crocuses are the earliest of their kind and they already bloom starting in February. They have more flowers than the garden crocuses, however the flowers are larger. The flowers are often streaked or spotted. In darkness and especially at low temperatures, the flowers close, but open in the sun or after a few minutes once there is a slight rise in temperature. Crocuses are undemanding and naturalise themselves if the leaves are not removed too soon. Extensive lawns make it easy to create so-called "crocus meadows" and they provide bees with plenty of food.
