Preparing the plot If the plot you are meaning to use has been used for farming to this point, we advise tilling the field. Ploughing the field in winter is also recommended to increase Nitrogen mineralisation, which results in better plant growth in the first year. In wa- ter protection areas however, one should refrain from winter tilling. When the soil has dried, harrowing is advised to prevent weeds from developing. On abandoned fields, couch grasses and thistles are often present. It is important to remove these weeds from the plot before sowing, as they may otherwise suppress the developments of the plants. We recom- mend mulching these areas before plan- ting. To avoid disturbing breeding animals, this step should not be taken before July. Depending on their legal status, pesticides may be used in autumn. Should the use of pesticides be illegal, multiple tilling of the plot is advised.
